Due to forecasts for continued severe weather resulting in area power outages, and concerns regarding impacts on roads and facilities throughout the evening, Berkeley County School District (BCSD) schools and offices will operate on a 2-hour weather delay on Wednesday, January 10. There will be no before school care programs, but after school programs and athletics will resume normal operations on Wednesday. Bus riders will report to bus stops two hours later than their regularly scheduled time. Information concerning school start times and bell schedules when operating on a 2-hour weather delay is available on the BCSD website here: https://www.bcsdschools.net/o/bcsd/page/school-bell-schedules. District officials are continuing to work closely with the Berkeley County Emergency Management Department, local power providers, and law enforcement to monitor the weather and potential impact on the county. Officials are also receiving regular updates from the National Weather Service. As safety and security is our number one priority, all decisions are made with the safety of students, staff, and families in mind.

Mrs. Anderson, Ms. Aarons, and Mrs. Evans tested gingerbread houses their classes planned and built as part of their severe weather STEAM unit. The houses were tested with earthquake, tornado, hurricane, and flooding simulations. Best of all, they were all still standing at the end!

Ms. Hardison's classes invited kindergarteners to take part in a Christmas tree challenge this week! The seventh graders taught the kindergarteners the history of the Christmas tree around the world and then teams of seventh graders and kindergarteners put the information and their creative thinking to the test! The groups were challenged to build the tallest tree with only gumdrops and toothpicks. What a great collaboration!

On December 6, Dr. Neal had a guest speaker for her 6th grade Forensic Science classes, Brady Vannoy, criminal defense lawyer at Vannoy Law Firm. He spoke to the students about his career and background in becoming a criminal defense attorney and a part-time JAG office. He then presented the class with an overview of the different criminal courts, how court proceedings work, gave examples of evidence found at crime scenes and what his responsibilities are to his clients, who are presumed innocent until proven guilty. The students answered many of his questions, based on the lessons in class and were also able to ask Mr. Vannoy questions.

Thanks to our generous PTA, every Daniel Island School student was able to participate in the South Carolina Aquarium Outreach Programs - Coastal Creators, Deep Dive, and Environmental Scene Investigations! Elementary students enjoyed learning about salt marsh ecosystems and animal adaptations, while our middle schoolers investigated environmental problems in SC watersheds. Best of all, each program ended with interactions with live animals!

Students in Ms. Gaskins's class participated in a Barbie Bungee project recently. The goal was to give the action figure the thrill of its plastic life, by getting within 50 centimeters of the ground by calculating the maximum number of rubber bands in its bungee cord so that it doesn't hit the ground.!
