Powder Puff

Hanahan High School is the lone Berkeley County school participating in powder puff football as a club sport for now but Lady Hawks coach Travis Dodd expects that number to grow.

The local league is a partnership between the North Charleston Police Department and North Charleston Recreation Department.

“I was talking to Reggie Burgess, who heads up the league,” said Dodd, the school’s resource officer, “and there are other teams wanting to get in our league. It’s something neat we think is going to take off in the Lowcountry. There was talk of it being up to possibly 12 teams next season.”

He said he’s heard for sure James Island, Pinewood Prep and Northwood are seriously interested in fielding powder puff teams for next fall.

powderpuff3Currently, North Charleston, Stall, Military Magnet, Garrett and Fort Dorchester are the other teams in the league.

“We’re looking forward to it,” Dodd said. “I would love to see more Berkeley County schools do it. I’d love to have more rivals in the county. Maybe we could have multiple divisions.”

The buzz reached fever pitch at the annual Sertoma Football Classic in mid-August, when the girls took to the field for the first time.

powderpuff1Hanahan sophomore quarterback Ashley Meckley bolted 50 yards against Fort Dorchester for the first-ever touchdown.

Meckley, who has the strongest arm in the league, is the leader of the offense and has pretty good wheels to boot.

“She is a true athlete,” Dodd said. “She’s doing fantastic. Not necessarily Hanahan, but I’d put her up against some of these guys playing on Friday nights.”

Dodd’s team improved to 1-1 with an 8-0 victory over Garrett on Tuesday, Sept. 8. Meckley’s touchdown pass to senior running back Brie Robinson on a screen play was the lone touchdown.

Other passing targets include receivers junior Hannah Robinson, freshman Phenix Gallashaw and junior Delaney Baker.

powderpuff2Dodd said the offensive line is working hard too.

On the other side of the ball, senior noseguard Akevea Brigance is disruptive to offensive fronts along with senior Miranda Tolliver. Sophomore Hannah Connolly is one of the leaders on the back end of the defense.

In it’s next game, Hanahan will take on Stall at Garrett.

“This is the most fun I’ve had in my football career,” Dodd said. “These girls are enjoying it.”

The championship game of the league is tentatively scheduled for next month on the new turf at Charleston Southern. The Lady Hawks hope to hoist the championship trophy.

“We want the girls to grow as a team,” Dodd said. “They started off as a group that signed up on a piece of paper and really didn’t know each other. You can see the relationships starting to grow.”
